Former New York Gov. George Pataki on Sunday defended his charge in last week's GOP presidential debate that former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton's emails were hacked.

"I think it's a very safe assumption," Pataki said on "Fox News Sunday."

After all, he said, the Democratic front-runner's private email server was inside here house and not secured. Other countries have been able to hack the CIA director, State Department and Defense Department, he argued.

Pataki, setting himself apart from his GOP rivals, said, "Republicans have to embrace science" on the issue of climate change.

"There's no question – none – that CO2 emitted by humans is a greenhouse gas that will warm the atmosphere all things being equal," he said, but added, "That doesn't mean we have to accept Barack Obama or Hillary Clinton's big strategy of raising government power, government control over energy and manufacturing in this country."

Republicans should embrace innovation, he said, noting that the United States is the only country in world with fewer greenhouse emissions than it 1995.

"And it's not because of the EPA or big government programs; it's because of private industry innovation," including fracking, he said.
