Gingrich on Swamp Draining: 'The Alligators Are Really Unhappy'

Breaking down the state of politics in Washington, D.C. – "turmoil and confusion" under President Donald Trump's leadership – former House Speaker Newt Gingrich said "draining the swamp" has led to the "alligators" being "pretty mad."

"The simplest way to think of it is: Donald Trump really is draining the swamp, and the alligators are really unhappy," Gingrich told "The Cats Roundtable" of 970 AM-N.Y.

Gingrich did admit change can be "frustrating" and "sometimes people get a little scared," especially the other side of the aisle, which stands to lose ground in Washington.

"If you think about it for a second, this guy is actually doing what he said he would do: We're getting conservative judges nominated; we are getting regulations rolled back; we're getting a real fight for a tax cut; we're getting a much more aggressive pro-American trade policy, and pro-American farm policy," Gringrich told host John Catsimatidis.

"The other side sees this as the end of their way of life. He is an enormous threat to them."

While President Trump's detractors seize on perceived White House chaos, Gingrich considers it a price of doing business with change.

"The turmoil and confusion is a necessary party of our determining who we are going to become," Gingrich said. "We've done this before as a country. We are the most energetic country in the world. And sometimes it gets very frustrating and sometimes people get a little scared, but I think it's very, very important for us that we be engaged as a country in doing everything we can to go out and to solve these problems."

There is still more change to come, too, Gingrich said, so do not expect the opposition to be any more thrilled.

"There are some real fights coming, and as I said, the easy way to think of it is, Trump really is draining the swamp and the alligators really are pretty mad," Gingrich said.
