Former Florida Gov. Jeb Bush said Monday he would like to see Roy Moore, the Republican candidate in the Alabama Senate race, step aside because of the sexual misconduct allegations leveled at him.
Bush said it does not come down to Moore being innocent or guilty in a criminal sense, but rather doing the right thing.
"I would," Bush told CNBC when asked if he agrees with others who say Moore should step down. "This is not a question of innocence or guilt like in a criminal proceeding, this is a question of what's right and what's wrong. Acknowledging that you're dating teenagers when you're 32 years old as assistant state attorney is wrong. It's just plain wrong."
Five women have come forward in the last week, saying Moore had sexual contact and/or pursued romantic relationships with them when they were teenagers several decades ago. Two of the women were minors at the time, which in Alabama means they were under the age of 16.
Moore has denied doing anything wrong or breaking any laws. He served as Alabama chief justice from 2013 to 2017.
"We need to stand for basic principles, and decency has to be one of those," Bush said Monday. "In the really poisonous political environment we have right now, one of the rules I think has to apply is that when you attack somebody on the other party, and the other team, for doing something wrong, when it happens on your team you have an obligation, I think, to speak out as well."
Several other Republicans have called on Moore to step aside from the Senate race as well, including Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell.
