Michael Bloomberg's gun safety group Everytown for Gun Safety announced it is endorsing Hillary Clinton for president.
"Hillary Clinton is the only candidate willing to take on the gun lobby," Shannon Watts, founder of Moms Demand Action for Gun Sense in America, told
The Hill.
"Donald Trump talks about making America great again, but Hillary Clinton has made it clear she's going to make America safe again," Watts said.
Michael Bloomberg, former New York City mayor, founded Everytown for Gun Safety in 2014 as a group to rival the National Rifle Association, according to
The New York Times.
The endorsement came ahead of the California primary, where Clinton is in a close race with Democratic Sen. Bernie Sanders of Vermont.
Watts said Sanders was "inconsistent" and had been in favor of granting gun manufacturers immunity from prosecution, but that Clinton has "never wavered in her support." Sanders has defended his record on guns, pointing out how the NRA gave him a "D-Minus" rating, according to
Politico.
Clinton favors universal background checks for all gun buyers, which closes a loophole that would prevent gun buys at gun shows and online. She supported President Barack Obama's executive action on guns.
Clinton has run ads promoting her stance on gun safety, including
a campaign video in January supporting President Obama's gun safety measures.
Presumptive Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump has gotten the endorsement of the National Rifle Association. He said Clinton "wants to abolish the Second Amendment," according to
CNN.
Everytown for Gun Safety joins gun control groups the Brady Campaign to Prevent Gun Violence and Americans for Responsible Solutions in endorsing Clinton. Arizona Democratic Rep. Gabrielle Giffords founded Americans for Responsible Solutions after surviving a gun attack in 2011.
