Rasmussen: Mourdock Slightly Ahead in Indiana Senate Race

Friday, 03 August 2012 11:39 AM EDT

The U.S. Senate race in Indiana remains a basic dead heat between Democratic Rep. Joe Donnelly and tea party-backed State Treasurer Richard Mourdock, with the Republican running slightly ahead, according to Rasmussen Reports.

The latest Rasmussen Reports national telephone survey of likely voters in the Hoosier State finds Mourdock garnering 42 percent of the vote, while Donnelly draws support from 40 percent.  Three percent prefer some other candidate in the race, and another 15 percent remain undecided.

The numbers have changed slightly since Rasmussen Reports’ first look at this race in late May, which found each candidate earning 42 percent of the vote.
Mourdock, who is serving his second term as state treasurer, ousted long-time Sen. Richard Lugar in the May 8 Republican primary, due to strong support from the tea party movement. Donnelly has been a U.S. representative from Indiana since 2007.

The Indiana survey of 400 likely voters was conducted July 31-August 1, by Rasmussen Reports.  The margin of sampling error is +/- 5 percentage points with a 95 percent level of confidence. Field work for all Rasmussen Reports surveys is conducted by Pulse Opinion Research, LLC.

Mourdock leads Donnelly 42 percent to 41 percent among male voters and 43 percent to 39 percent among female voters.

Seventy-five percent of Indiana Republicans support Mourdock, while 85 percent of Democrats back Donnelly.  Among voters not affiliated with either party, the Democrat is slightly ahead 39 percent to 35 percent.  But 27 percent of these voters either favor another candidate in the race or are undecided.
