Michelle Obama to Organize Grass-Roots Support for President

Thursday, 26 July 2012 02:18 PM EDT

Michelle Obama has become well-known for her campaign against childhood obesity and as an advocate for military families. Now, she is throwing herself into a campaign that, if successful, will mean she will be first lady for another four years.

The Washington Post reports that Mrs. Obama has dropped her aversion to politics and thrown herself into an effort to organize grass-roots supporters across the country in a push called “It Takes One.”

David Axelrod, an Obama campaign senior adviser, told the Post that Mrs. Obama is “someone who never asked to be on the public stage and never aspired to be on the public stage but now has found a comfortable place.”

However, the Post writes that the “election that has been virtually deadlocked for months” and “every ounce of her enthusiasm could count.” The Post noted that in an interview on the “Steve Harvey Morning Show” Mrs. Obama said, “We can’t assume we love Barack [so] he is going to be fine. No. That’s not how this works. We have to be vigilant.”

Anita McBride, former chief of staff to First Lady Laura Bush, told the Post, “At this point, what have you got to lose? This is your last national campaign. It really sort of frees you up for all kinds of strategies to win,”
