Palin to Campaign for Cruz in Texas Senate Contest

By    |   Thursday, 26 July 2012 01:21 PM EDT

Sarah Palin will campaign for Texas Republican candidate for Senate, Ted Cruz, marking her first foray on the campaign trail since earlier this month, according to ABC News.

The former Alaska governor and Republican vice presidential nominee will appear Friday at a rally for Cruz north of Houston, ABC News reported. She appeared at an Americans for Prosperity rally earlier in the month in Michigan. Palin has kept somewhat of a low profile compared to the 2010 midterms when she went toured the country with the Tea Party Express, according to ABC News.

Sen. Jim DeMint of South Carolina will also appear alongside Cruz. Another rally for Cruz in Dallas will feature Glenn Beck. Rick Santorum will campaign with Cruz over the weekend, ABC News reported. The race is the most expensive in the country so far this cycle, with more than $37 million spent, ABC News reported.

Cruz, who is Cuban-American, is running against Lt. Gov. David Dewhurst, a former solicitor general of Texas, for the seat being vacated by Sen. Kay Bailey Hutchinson. Dewhurst, who won the Texas primary May 29 by 10 percentage points but fell short of an outright majority is backed by Gov. Rick Perry and was once considered a shoe-in until Palin and other conservative favorites got involved in the race.

Dewhurst and Cruz square off Tuesday in a runoff, with the winner seen as the overwhelming favorite to win November's general election.

Cruz’s communications director James Bernsen told ABC News that they expect large crowds at both the events in Dallas and Houston. After Palin’s endorsement ahead the May 31 primary, Bernsen said they received between 900 and 1,000 online donations almost immediately.

Palin is three for three in her primary endorsement record so far, having helped secure victories for Se. Orrin Hatch in Utah, Richard Mourdock in Indiana and Deb Fischer in Nebraska, ABC News reported.
