President Donald Trump's approval rating has gone up, thanks to his success at handling the economy, according to a Quinnipiac poll released Thursday.
Trump's job approval rating, according to the poll:
- 39 percent approve, an increase from 33 percent on Aug. 2.
- 57 percent disapprove, a decrease from 61 percent Aug. 2.
- Voters are evenly split on whether they approve of Trump's handling of the economy.
- 46 percent approve, an increase from 41 percent on Aug. 2.
- 46 percent disapprove, a decrease from 52 percent on Aug. 2.
"Sorely in need of an infusion of support, President Donald Trump can at least hang his hat on the economy, although it's a very small peg," said Tim Malloy, Quinnipiac University poll director.
Overall, voters said former President Barack Obama is responsible for the quality of the economy, with 50 percent agreeing and 38 percent disagreeing, according to the poll report.
However, Republicans who were asked that question gave Trump credit for the economy for the first time, with 55 percent saying Trump gets credit and 36 percent disagreeing that Trump deserves the credit.
That number is the highest level since Quinnipiac first asked that question in a poll in 2001, the poll report said.
Quinnipiac University conducted the poll from Aug. 9-15, among 1,361 registered voters with a margin of error of plus or minus 3.4 percentage points.
