Rubio Appears in New Immigration Ads to Air on Fox

A new ad campaign by a conservative group is adding to the pressure on Congressional Republicans to support immigration reform.

The American Action Network plans to spend $300,000 over the next week for ads on Fox News featuring Republican Sen. Marco Rubio of Florida, reports The Wall Street Journal.

The ad features Rubio appealing to fellow Republicans to back legislation he helped draft as part of the so-called bipartisan Gang of Eight senators working on an immigration overhaul. The bill proposes strengthening border security and employment verification while establishing a path to citizenship for the 11 million illegal immigrants already in the country.

“They’re going to have to wait 13 years,” Rubio says in the ad, which will begin airing on Fox Wednesday night. “They’re going to have to pay fines. They’re going to have to learn English. They’re going to have to work. They’re going to have to wait at the back of the line,” he continues.

“There is a lot of clutter out there on immigration reform, “American Action Network spokesman Dan Conston told the Journal. “We believe there are key components in this legislation that conservatives should embrace,” he said.

The group was founded in 2010 by former Minnesota Sen. Norm Coleman and GOP donor and activist Fred Malek. The offshoot Hispanic Leadership Network has backed Republican Hispanic candidates.

The new ads follow ones aired last week by Facebook co-founder Mark Zuckerberg’s FWD.us. PAC, created to promote immigration reform. Many high-tech companies have reportedly rallied behind the Senate bill, which would allow more skilled foreign workers into the country.
