EPA Administrator Scott Pruitt told Politico Wednesday that if reducing carbon dioxide emissions was so important to German Chancellor Angela Merkel then the elimination of nuclear power plants in her country runs counter to your goals, reports Politico.
“Last time I checked, it’s pretty clean on CO2,” he said in a wide-ranging interview.
Pruitt also blasted critics of Trump’s climate policies for being hypocritical.
"I just think the hypocrisy runs rampant," Pruitt said. "To look at us as a nation and say, 'You all need to do more' in light of what we’ve done in leading with innovation and technology — the hypocrisy is palpable in those areas."
Trump has been slammed for his decision to withdraw from the Paris climate agreement, and Merkel has been one of his biggest critics. French President Emmanuel Macron, who Trump will meet with this week in Paris, has also blasted the president — he invited American scientists to continue their work in France and mocked Trump with a Twitter hashtag fashioned after his campaign slogan.
Trump said the accord imposed wildly unfair environmental standards on U.S. businesses and workers. Pruitt echoed that sentiment and said America can still address climate change without being tied down to an international agreement.
"What we ought to be focused upon in my view is exporting innovation and technology to nations like China, like India, to help them with respect to their power grid," he said.
