Poll: 51 Percent Disagree With Trump Firing Comey

Fifty-one percent of likely U.S. voters disagree with President Donald Trump's firing of FBI Director James Comey last week, while only 36 percent support the decision, according to a Rassmussen Reports survey released on Monday.

This disapproval of the decision was despite the fact that only 33 percent said that Comey's job performance as head of the FBI was either good or excellent. Thirty-one percent said he did a fair job, while 25 percent thought his performance was poor.

Other results from the survey include:

• Sixty percent of Republicans agree with Trump's decision to fire Comey.
• Seventy-one percent of Democrats disagree with the firing of the FBI director.
• Among independents, 51 percent disagreed with the president's decision to fire Comey.
• Forty-five percent of Democrats said that Comey did a good or excellent job as FBI director, while among both Republicans and independents only 26 percent thought so.
• Sixty-three percent of all voters have a favorable opinion of the FBI, but 35 percent say that the agency has a political agenda.
• Only 26 percent of all voters said the FBI director is influenced by the president in his decision-making, while 53 percent say the director is truly independent of the administration and 21 percent are not sure.

The survey of 1,000 likely voters was conducted on May 11 and 14. The margin of sampling error is +/- 3 percentage points, with a 95 percent level of confidence.
