Lt. Gov. Ralph Northam, a Democrat, is favored by 53 percent of voters in the race for Virginia governor, compared to Republican Ed Gillespie, who is backed by 40 percent, a Washington Post-Schar School poll reveals.
Here are some highlights from the survey:
- 33 percent of those polled in Virginia approve of the way President Donald Trump is handling his job, while 59 percent disapprove.
- 31 percent says monuments to Confederate leaders should be removed from government property, while 57 percent believe they should stay.
- 35 percent say illegal immigration is a very serious problem in Virginia, while 59 percent say it is not.
The poll, conducted Sept. 28 - Oct. 2, surveyed 720 likely voters. It has a margin of error of plus or minus 4.5 percentage points.
