Bruce Springsteen released a new protest song Wednesday that bashes President Donald Trump, calling him a “con man” and referencing several controversial comments made by Trump.
“That’s What Makes Us Great” was written by Joe Grushecky, who sent the song to Springsteen for his consideration.
“He gave it the Bruce treatment,” Grushecky told the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette.
The song released on Sirius XM and Grushecky’s website Wednesday morning, according to Rolling Stone. It was expected to be available on iTunes in the near future as well.
“Don’t tell me a lie/ And sell it as fact/ I’ve been down that road before/ And I ain’t going back,” some of the lyrics read.
Another part of the song says, “Don’t you brag to me/ That you never read a book/ I never put my faith/ In a con man and his crooks.” The lyrics also speak of immigration issues.
Grushecky told the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette he couldn’t support Trump after he appeared to mock a disabled reporter.
“How could a person like that be president of the United States?” Grushecky asked, adding that he has worked with special needs people as a teacher for many years and has special needs family members.
Trump has said repeatedly that he wasn’t mocking the reporter’s disability but was criticizing his viewpoint with a gesture he has used on many other occasions with those who are not disabled.
Springsteen has been critical of Trump since before the election, most famously calling him a “moron” in a September interview with Rolling Stone.
“Well, you know, the republic is under siege by a moron, basically,” he said in that interview. “Without overstating it, it’s a tragedy for our democracy.”
Some Twitter users were excited for a new Springsteen tune, while others who listened to it thought it was only so-so, for the Boss.
