Rep. Cassidy to Newsmax: Americans ‘Deliberately Deceived’

By    |   Thursday, 28 June 2012 02:00 PM EDT

Rep. Bill Cassidy accused President Barack Obama Thursday of deliberately deceiving the American people about the individual mandate in Obamacare, saying the Supreme Court decision had finally revealed what it really is – a new tax on Americans.

“If nothing else, the Supreme Court stripped away any ruse that this was not a tax . . . The American people were deliberately deceived,” the Louisiana Republican told Newsmax TV, referring to the mandate that all Americans must obtain health insurance or face a tax penalty if they don’t.

Cassidy, a physician and member of the Republican medical caucus, also criticized the Medicaid expansion portion of the law, saying it would inevitably lead to higher taxes if states try to meet that requirement.

The states are already going bankrupt because of Medicaid and if they accept the expansion it will “inevitably lead” to an increase in state taxes.

Asked about when Republicans might actually deliver on their threats to “repeal and replace” Obamacare, Cassidy said: “The action will be in November. If President Obama is re-elected, there is no hope for repeal and replace. If he is diselected then there will be that vote.”
