Two chambers have been discovered deep inside Egypt’s Great Pyramid of Giza with the use of infrared thermography and space particle detectors.
Scientists have been using various noninvasive and nondestructive methods to study the 4,500-year-old pyramid and the three others in Egypt as part of the Scan Pyramids project that began in October 2015.
Muon detectors, which detect space particles 200 times larger than electrons, showed an open space behind the north face of the great structure that experts speculate could be one or two corridors going into the pyramid, RT reported. The chambers are completely isolated and separate from all other known tombs and passages in the structure.
Scientists are still investigating "the precise shape, size, and exact position" of the chambers, they said in a news release, but should be wrapping up their efforts by the end of the month.
The Great Pyramid of Giza is 480 feet tall and was the tallest man-made structure in the world for almost 4,000 years after its construction in 2560 BC. In July, scientists discovered a defense “machine” in the pyramid that served to protect the royal tombs from theft.
Archaeologists and others, including the director of the Giza Pyramids Excavation Zahi Hawass, are skeptical about the discovery so far, however.
“These people are scientists and do not have an archaeological background,” Hawass told Seeker. “I think there are no secret rooms and these anomalies have to do with the way the pyramid was built.”
He said more research, such as a photogrammetric map of the pyramid, will be needed to show whether the discoveries are secret chambers or just rooms. The committee has approved a one-year extension of the project.
