An emotional Jim Carrey attended Cathriona White's funeral in Ireland over the weekend, even serving as one of the pallbearers after his on-again-off-again girlfriend committed suicide inside her Los Angeles home two weeks ago.
A family source told People magazine that the 53-year-old actor "seemed terribly upset" during White's service, which was held in her hometown of Cappawhite.
"It was nice that he carried her coffin," the source said. "Cathriona's sisters and family seemed very glad to have him there."
White, 30, was found dead two days after the third anniversary of her father's death and just a few days after a reported breakup with Carrey. Officials discovered bottles of prescription pills near her body along with several suicide notes, including one to Carrey, according to People.
Carrey posted a silhouette photo of he and White on Twitter Saturday.
TMZ reported that White attempted suicide once before right after her father's death in 2012. Her friends told investigators that her estranged biological mother wrote her a letter on her recent birthday calling her a failure, something that may have contributed to her decision to take her own life.
Sources who knew both Carrey and White told TMZ that when the actor broke up with White on Sept. 24, he did not completely close the door on a relationship with her in the future.
"On September 19th, they had dinner at Nobu in Malibu for her birthday, and appeared very happy," the celebrity gossip site reported. "However, Cathriona says Jim dumped her on September 24th. We're told she wrote about the breakup in her suicide letter. Sources tell us friends tried to console White . . . telling her Jim still cared for her, but she was too distraught."
White, who worked as a hairstylist and beautician, dated
Carrey on and off since 2012, according to CNN.
"She was a truly kind and delicate Irish flower, too sensitive for this soil, to whom loving and being loved was all that sparkled," Carrey said in a statement after her death. "My heart goes out to her family and friends and to everyone who loved and cared about her. We have all been hit with a lightning bolt."
