Now, 36 hours after Las Vegas shooter Stephen Paddock started carrying out the worst mass shooting in U.S. history -- in terms of both deaths and injuries -- nobody credible seems publicly to have a clue about why he did it and, for the most part, how he did it.

Unless there's a conspiracy of silence, as of Tuesday morning authorities are stumped.

The death toll could still increase in the coming days, law enforcement officials said in an update on the tragic incident, ABC News reported.

As of Tuesday morning, 59 people were listed as dead and 527 injured from the shooting, per ABC News, and Clark County Coroner John Fudenberg warned those numbers were still fluid.

Authorities believe Paddock shot into a crowd of 22,000 attending the Route 91 Harvest festival from 32 stories above in Mandalay Bay Resort and Casino while country star Jason Aldean performed, CNN reported. They found his dead body in a room of the hotel crammed with weapons.

Concertgoers and bystanders who ran from the outdoor festival to escape the gunfire and tried to care for the wounded have become TV heroes, along with first responders and the police whose reactions in saving people and getting to Paddock were “miraculously” quick.

A subdued President Donald Trump spoke eloquently and reassuringly.

The names, faces and life stories of the victims have begun to emerge. Countless stories of horror, bravery, service and sadness have been told. There has been enough time for hoaxes, conspiracies and politics to spawn.

But 36 hours later, the huge questions about why and how Paddock carried out the carnage remained.

On Monday, Nevada Gov. Brian Sandoval signed a declaration of emergency for Clark County, directing all state agencies to supplement the local efforts to save lives and protect the health and safety of the victims, the Las Vegas Review-Journal reported.

Sandoval also cleared the way for healthcare providers in other states to practice in Nevada by declaring a public health and medical disaster.

Las Vegas Mayor Carolyn Goodman told the Review-Journal the city has a broken heart, "but it has bonded us so tightly. We will not be tarnished by this sick, horrible human being."

Police said they ruled out Paddock's girlfriend, Marilou Danley, as a suspect, after first identifying her as a "person of interest" in the shooting, but the why and how of that also hasn’t been explained

Authorities said they believe Paddock acted as a "lone wolf," despite the Islamic State news agency Amaq saying Paddock had converted to Islam and claiming responsibility for the attack, National Public Radio reported.

FBI Las Vegas Special Agent-in-Charge Aaron Rouse said the agency had "determined, to this point, no connection with an international terrorist group," NPR noted.

CBS News reported that Paddock had no criminal record beyond a routine citation several years ago that was handled in court.

Eric Paddock, Stephen Paddock's brother, told reporters he was "horrified" and "dumbfounded" by his sibling's actions.

"No religious affiliation. No political affiliation. He just hung out," Eric Paddock said, per CBS News. "He had a couple of guns but they were all handguns, legal. He might have had one long gun, but he had them in a safe."
