Gallup Poll: Americans Favor Federally-Funded Healthcare

Americans believe the government should replace the Affordable Care Act with a federally-funded healthcare system — an idea approved of by Democratic presidential candidate Bernie Sanders, a new Gallup poll reveals.

Given three separate possibilities for the future of the Affordable Care Act:

• 58 percent favor replacing the current law with a federally funded healthcare system that provides insurance for all Americans, as Sanders advocates.
• 51 percent believe the Affordable Care Act should be scrapped, as presumptive GOP presidential nominee Donald Trump wants.
• 48 percent favor keeping the Affordable Care Act as is, as Democratic presidential frontrunner Hillary Clinton generally wants.

"The results show that many Americans are OK with several ways of handling the ACA rather than favoring only one possibility," Gallup's Frank Newport writes.

When Gallup asked those who favor keeping the Affordable Care Act or replacing it with a federally-funded system to choose one of them, they chose the federally-funded option by a 2-to-1 — 64 percent to 32 percent.

Last Thursday, a federal judge ruled the Obama administration has been improperly funding an Obamacare subsidy program, a stunning victory in a lawsuit filed by Republicans in the House against the White House.

The Gallup poll of 1,549 adults was conducted May 6-8 and has a margin of sampling error of ±3 percentage points.
