Ben Carson on Sunday used the controversial issue of transgender rights to blast the rise of political correctness in the United States.

"For thousands of years, we have known what a man is and what a woman is, and now our children are being confused?" Carson told a group of Donald Trump supporters at a small rally in Newark, New Jersey, The Mansfield News Journal reports.

"Well, I know that you look like a man, and I know that's what your genetics say, but you get up in the morning and you feel like a woman, you're a woman. Give me a break. This is craziness. We can expect more of the same if we continue down this politically correct pathway."

Carson, a retired pediatric neurosurgeon, made an unsuccessful bid for the 2016 Republican presidential nomination.
