Sanjay Gupta: Dallas Hospital 'Surrendered' on Ebola Patient

By    |   Wednesday, 15 October 2014 06:28 PM EDT

Dr. Sanjay Gupta, CNN's chief medical correspondent, says it is "disappointing" that Texas Health Presbyterian Hospital in Dallas has essentially surrendered in its efforts to treat Amber Vinson, the second nurse to contract the deadly Ebola virus after treating patient Thomas Eric Duncan.

Vinson is being flown to Emory University Hospital in Atlanta, where two Americans who contracted the virus in West Africa were successfully treated.

"I say that's disappointing because they've been able to contain this in places like rural central Africa, in tent villages in the middle of nowhere that I have seen. Then at a big, gleaming hospital in the middle of Dallas, there's a bit of a surrender," Gupta said Wednesday on CNN's "The Lead with Jake Tapper."

Another nurse who treated Duncan, Nina Pham, is being treated in Dallas at the same hospital where she and Vinson treated Duncan. But Gupta said Vinson may be sicker than Pham.

Still, he noted, there is no "special potion" at Emory to give Vinson better treatment than she could get in Dallas.
