Cuban Groups Protesting in Miami

Saturday, 20 December 2014 08:36 AM EST

Protesters waving Cuban flags have started to gather for a demonstration against President Barack Obama's plan to normalize relations with the Castro government.

A Cuban opposition leader from the island is expected to open the protest Saturday afternoon. Activist Jorge Luis Garcia Perez, known as Antunez, is scheduled to join Cuban Americans in Miami.

More than two dozen exile groups are listed as participating. Just before the demonstration was scheduled to begin, about 4 dozen people had shown up, mostly older Cuban-Americans. Many carried Cuban flags or wore shirts with the flag displayed.

Several expressed disappointment that since the announcement of renewed U.S.-Cuba ties, protests haven't been very big.

Miami is no stranger to protests from the Cuban community, though they have become smaller and more sporadic in recent years.
