A majority of Americans say President Donald Trump hasn't made progress on his vow to change the way Washington works, a new poll showed.

The Gallup survey released Tuesday found that 54 percent say Trump hasn't succeeded on his campaign vow; 40 percent say he's made headway on the promise.

The opinions broke down along party lines:

  • 78 percent of Republicans say Trump has made progress.
  • 79 percent of Democrats disagree, along with independents, by a nearly 2-1 margin, the survey showed.

Voters had more positive views about former President Barack Obama's efforts to change Washington around the same mark in his presidency, according to Gallup's polling.

In 2009, after he was first elected, 53 percent said Obama had made progress compared to 45 percent who said he hadn't, the pollster found.

Trump repeatedly pledged to "drain the swamp" and end corruption in Washington during his campaign.

Gallup conducted its latest survey about a week before Trump marked his 100th day in office. The poll's margin of error is plus or minus 4 percentage points.
