Actress Jane Fonda — derisively dubbed "Hanoi Jane" for visiting North Vietnam during the height of the Vietnam War — is lending her celebrity status to environmental activists protesting oil extraction at a tar sands field in Canada, The Daily Caller reports.
Invited by Greenpeace Canada, Fonda showed up Tuesday at Fort McMurray, Alberta, Tuesday to protest oil sands extraction, and is set to speak at a rally at Edmonton's University of Alberta.
But pushing back on claims of environmental damage are groups like Oil Sands Action, which claims on its Facebook page that "Canadian energy is produced to the highest standards for human rights and equality in the world."
"We respect the opinions of Hollywood celebrities; but they are not entitled to their facts," Chelsie Klassen, media manager with the Canadian Association of Petroleum Producers told the Daily Caller, insisting Canada has stringent environmental protection standards.
