Mental health professionals in Washington, D.C., are reporting seeing an increase in patients with high anxiety and stress as a result of Republican Donald Trump's surprising Election Day victory, according to the Free Beacon.
"This is very different," David Sternberg, the founder and director of D.C. Talk Therapy, told the Free Beacon Monday.
"This is pretty unprecedented – anger, frustration, anxiety, sadness –a lot of current patients and clients have wanted to talk about the election."
Trump, himself perhaps surprised by the results, won the race on electoral votes with at least 270, despite predictions he would lose in a landslide to Democratic nominee Hillary Clinton.
Pollsters were far off, as were news reports and forecasts, but Trump won key swing states North Carolina, Florida, Ohio, Michigan, and Wisconsin.
Elite Democrats in Washington have started support groups following his victory and, George Mason University created a "healing space" on campus where students can gather and discuss their feelings, according to the Free Beacon.
Other universities offered therapy dogs, arts and crafts, and tissues and hot chocolate at a cry-in, according to the Wall Street Journal.
"People are frustrated, people are just really sad and shocked," said Trey Boynton, the director of multi-ethnic student affairs at the University of Michigan.
