A lot of people were impressed with former President Barack Obama's acceptance speech as he received the Profiles in Courage Award on Sunday night, but conservative commentator Charles Krauthammer was not among them.
In his address at the John F. Kennedy Library and Museum in Boston, Obama praised Democrats in Congress who risked their political careers to pass the Affordable Care Act, known popularly as Obamacare, and added he hopes Republicans will stand up as their party works to repeal the law.
"I hope that current members of Congress recall that it actually doesn't take a lot of courage to aid those who are already powerful, already comfortable, already influential," Obama said. "But it does require some courage to champion the vulnerable and the sick and the infirm, those who often have no access to the corridors of power."
Krauthammer, appearing Monday on Fox News' "Special Report," called Obama's words "complete moral condescension."
"The other guys are cowards because I, and the people who support me . . . stand with the poor and afflicted, and the others are on the side of the rich and powerful," Krauthammer interpreted Obama.
Democrats have "practically committed political suicide," he said, noting Obamacare has only 17 percent support of the population and Republicans are right to repeal and replace it.
"Obama had eight years. He didn't want to touch it," Krauthammer said, saying Obama now pretends he is the one advocating a courageous position when it goes completely against what the public wants.
Obama did that all through his presidency, Krauthammer said, "always assuming he was on the side of the angels, and always the one who was willing to go against public opinion when it was completely the opposite."
"It's been a full 100 days, but it was nice to be reminded of why we should be grateful as a nation that he is gone," Krauthammer said. "Good riddance, Mr. President."
