Tommy Tuberville guided Auburn University to the top of the most powerful conference in college football during his 10 years as head coach. He might now be aiming for a bigger prize: the role of Alabama governor.
Tuberville on Monday filed paperwork with the Alabama Secretary of State's office indicating he was gearing up for a run, a move confirmed by Alabama GOP chief Terry Lathan via tweet.
The paperwork includes the formation of a principal campaign committee and a financial disclosure form revealing a $100,000 loan Tuberville took out to start a campaign.
Tuberville has yet to indicate whether he will indeed run, but told the Montgomery Advertiser last Friday that he wanted to take the correct steps in case it does happen.
"Everybody I've talked to says 'I hear you're running' and that's just not the case yet," Tuberville said. "I'm thinking about it and this isn't a game we're talking about now."
He said he'd like to hear from the public first.
"I want to talk to people and hear what they have to say about not only what they think about me running but what they want to hear from their legislative leaders in this state," Tuberville said. "I'm hearing a lot of people express frustrations that their politicians don't work for them but the people feel they work for the politicians. I'm sure that's no different than people feel across the country."
Tuberville's tenure at Auburn included a winning record against Southeastern Conference rival Alabama and, eight consecutive bowl game appearances. He finished with an 85-40 record.
