There are many companies that make an extra effort in hiring and maintaining veteran employees. They often have support programs for vets and their families as veteran-friendly companies.

These firms not only meet federal requirements for veteran employment, but they also implement programs that assist vets in their careers, helping them in everything from finding the right job to building their expertise for top positions in the company.

Here are seven veteran-friendly companies that aim to improve their businesses by hiring vets:

1. Marsh & McLennan Companies — Named the No. 1 Military Friendly Employer for 2017 by Victory Media, the firm provides services for strategies and solutions, according to G.I. Jobs. Marsh & McLennan also has programs to help military veteran candidates develop interviewing skills for job placement.

2. Combined Insurance — Headquartered in Illinois, the insurance provider partners with organizations to help with the hiring of thousands of vets, Forbes reported. The organizations include Hiring Our Heroes and the Transitions Assistance Program.

3. United Services Automobile Association — USAA is a Texas financial service that offers banking and investing information for veterans and their families. About 14 percent of its employees were veterans by 2014.

4. 7-Eleven, Inc. — The convenience stores hire veterans because of their skills in leadership and teamwork, according to Military Friendly. Its military franchise program helps vets transition into the job market by emphasizing their qualifications and experience from their time in the service.

5. Allstate Corporation — Former military leaders hold top management positions for the insurer of some 16 million households. Support and development programs within the company help veterans succeed in key areas of its business.

6. Hilton — One of the largest hospitality companies in the world, Hilton hires veterans because of their skills, integrity, and teamwork in helping guests have enjoyable experiences. Nearly 10,000 vets and their families work for Hilton in areas from call center operations and guest services to sales.

7. Celadon Trucking Services, Inc. — The transportation and logistics company hires veterans because of their high-quality work ethic. The company also has a Warrior Fleet for drivers, providing veteran employees with a voice and a network.
