An NBC News reporter has compared the Republican Party's relationship to Donald Trump to that of an abused woman who keeps returning to her brutish lover, insisting he's going to change.

Katy Tur said the analogy came up as she was spoke to a GOP official about the fractious bond between the Republican presidential nominee and party leaders.

"I asked [a] party official about this today. I likened it to an abusive relationship, basically," Tur said during a discussion with Chuck Todd on MSNBC.

"A girlfriend who keeps saying that despite the abuse her boyfriend is giving her — the attacks — that he's gonna change. He really loves her and promises her this time it's going to be different."

Tur added that the Republican National Committee realizes this.

"They see that Donald Trump has promised he would change and would pivot before and he hasn't done it. Their issue is that they just can't walk away. They're on a deserted island," she said.

Tur said a "swing-state GOP operative" she spoke with called the billionaire real-estate tycoon "diagnosably ill" and somebody a psychiatrist would say had a "personality disorder."
