The New York Times editorial board slammed President Donald Trump Wednesday for his comments in reaction to the Tuesday terror attack in New York City.

The board mentioned Trump's tweeted reactions to the attack, including calling an immigrant visa program a "Chuck Schumer beauty."

"Mr. Trump might instead have rallied the nation. But he could not resist resorting to his campaign fantasy that closing the nation's borders to those whom he selectively targets is the all-purpose solution to terrorist violence," the board wrote.

While Trump suggested he would "certainly consider" sending the attack suspect to the Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, military prison, the board criticized that possibility.

"That would be foolishly controversial and counterproductive, considering the criminal case that authorities are already building in New York," the board wrote, noting that the suspect had been charged under terrorism laws.

The board also pointed out that prosecutors have gained convictions against hundreds of terrorism defendants since Sept. 11, 2001, while no 9/11 defendant in Guantanamo Bay has been brought to trial.

"When it comes to achieving justice, Guantanamo is the real laughingstock," the board wrote.
