The six-month delay in the president’s controversial decision to end the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program has come under fire from one of his strongest supporters — Kansas Secretary of State Kris Kobach.
Kobach told reporters on Tuesday that he would have ended the program immediately. “If it is illegal, then you don’t keep violating the law for another six months,” said Kobach, who is considered the leading candidate for the Republican nomination for governor in 2018.
An early Trump supporter, Kobach was also the principal author of much of the language in the national GOP platform dealing with illegal immigration.
Following the election last fall, onetime Republican State Chairman Kobach was considered for the position of secretary of homeland security that eventualy went to Gen. John Kelly (who was recently tapped to be White House chief of staff).
Asked by Newsmax about Kobach’s criticism of the six-month delay, White House press secretary Sarah Sanders replied: “I think our response is pretty clear. The president made a decision and we feel it was the right one.”
The president’s top spokeswoman was also asked if the president was giving the estimated 800,000 covered by DACA his “personal assurance that at the end of six months they will not be deported.”
Sanders replied, “I think he is giving Congress the ability to do their job."
