New U.S. Ambassador to Canada Kelly Knight Craft told CBC News that she believes "there are sciences on both sides [of the climate change debate] that are accurate."
"I think that both sides have their own results, from their studies, and I appreciate and I respect both sides of the science," Craft said in expanding on her explanation.
The new ambassador also said that although President Donald Trump may appear to have a different approach to climate change after he signaled that the United States would leave the Paris accord, "we all have the same goal, and that is to better our environment and to maintain the environment.
"I feel like our administration has been on top of this regardless of whether or not they'd be pulling out," she added.
Craft formally assumed her post on Monday after presenting her credentials to Canadian Gov. Gen. Julie Payette in Ottawa. She is a former Republican fundraiser who is married to billionaire coal-mining magnate Joe Craft.
She said that as ambassador she would attempt to promote strong economic relationship and work together on security issues at the border, while also making cross-border trade and travel easier.
"No two countries share a deeper or broader relationship than Canada and the United States," she said. "We are bound together by history, our values, our economy, our families, our environment and our resolve to improve the lives of our citizens."
Craft said she plans to visit Canadians nationwide and meet with politicians and community leaders at all levels in order to gain a deeper understanding of the "dynamic, multicultural society."
