DNC Chairman Perez: Party Needs to Keep Working on Voters

Democratic National Committee Chairman Tom Perez said Wednesday his party ended up well by taking the House, and noted that the election results showed the midterms were "clearly the year of the woman," but there were high profile races, such as in Florida, that showed where more work is needed.

"I wanted to win every race, and I was down in Georgia, and we have to continue doing what we are doing in the sense of organize, organize, organize," Perez told CNN's "New Day." "Turnout was up on both sides, so when you look at the modeling that was in place, we turned out more voters than ever before and we have to keep working at it."

However, he said, it's been 24 years since Democrats won in Florida, and a similar amount of time in Georgia, and then there was the matter of President Donald Trump and his similar push to bring out voters.

"The politics of fear is his playbook and the politics of fear can motivate people," said Perez. "There's no doubt about that. What we have to do is continue to build relationships with voters, not just in the three-run run up to an election."

Now that Democrats have control of the House, the main priority is protecting heathcare coverage for people with pre-existing conditions, and working on a robust infrastructure bill that could put people to work, said Perez.

"We have to make sure that we invest in public education," he added. "We heard that and we have a governor in Kansas in no small measure because under Republican leadership, Kansas starved public education."
