President Donald Trump stumbled repeatedly as he tried to remember the name of a Green Beret killed in Africa when he called his widow to try to console her over the death of the fallen soldier, she told ABC Monday.
"I heard him stumbling on trying to remember my husband's name, and that's what hurt me the most because if my husband is out here fighting for our country and he risked his life for our country why can't you remember his name," Myeshia Johnson said of her husband U.S. Army Sgt. La David Johnson.
"That's what made me upset and cry even more because my husband was an awesome soldier."
Sgt. Johnson was one of four Special Services soldiers killed Oct. 4 in the West African country of Niger in the fight against terrorists of Boko Haram, the islamic State and al Qaida.
Trump's call to Johnson's widow sparked a controversy that touched Johnson's family, a member of Congress and White House Chief of State John Kelly, a retired Marine general.
Rep. Frederica Wilson, a Florida Democrat, first accused Trump of insensitivity in his condolence call. Wilson, who was riding with Johnson's widow to an Army base to reclaim the body, said she listened to Trump's call over a speaker phone.
Wilson said Trump remarked that Sgt. Johnson “knew what he was signing up for, but I guess it hurts anyway.” Trump insists Wilson is lying.
