CNN political reporter Daniella Diaz got lots of Twitter blowback Tuesday accusing her of mocking Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, R-Ky., for getting help up the stairs from President Donald Trump on Monday.
Diaz ran a running report Monday on her Twitter page as Trump and McConnell held a press conference in the White House Rose Garden that included addressing their so-called feud. Both denied any ill feelings.
But it was Diaz's final tweet in the series which provoked online anger. In it, she embedded video and showed McConnell reaching out to Trump, who grabbed his arm to help him up the stairs as the two made their way back toward the White House.
McConnell can clearly be seen reaching out to get help up the stairs, which Trump immediately provided.
But, as several Twitter users noted, McConnell is a survivor of childhood polio, and his need for assistance up stairs is an effect of that and not a visual attempt to show political unity.
Even one of Diaz's fellow CNN reporters, Manu Raju, noted the reason McConnell needed aid:
As of Tuesday afternoon, Diaz had not responded publicly to the criticism, nor had she taken down the tweet. Fox News reported CNN declined to comment.
The tweet that drew public ire was not the only one where she used similar phraseology. An earlier tweet noted the dour-looking face on McConnell as Trump said he has a "fantastic relationship" with GOP Senators and members of the House.
