House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif., plans on seeking her old position as House Speaker if her party retakes the Lower Chamber, but many Democratic candidates have said it’s time for a new leader, The Washington Post reports.
There are 260 non-incumbent Democrats running for office this year, and 87, or about one-in-three, have declined to endorse Pelosi for speaker if they retake the House, and almost a dozen incumbents have called for a new leader.
Of those 87, about half are running in “Toss Up” districts, according to the Cook Political Report.
The Post released a list of the 87 candidates that have refused to endorse or have avoided endorsing Pelosi, including popular progressives Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and Ayanna Pressley, both of whom ousted longtime Democratic incumbents in solidly blue districts in New York and Massachusetts, respectively.
Pelosi has continued to support even Democratic candidates who oppose her, saying last summer when asked how members of her party ought to deal with candidates that split with leadership, she said, “We just want to win. When I’m not in the Capitol and I’m someplace else, I’m raising money to elect those very people. Everything is at stake in our country. … So I just say, ‘Just win, baby.’”
