More than half of Americans favor regulation of certain guns and accessories, according to a poll by Zogby Analytics.
The survey was conducted Oct. 19-25 – before the latest mass shooting at a Texas church which left 26 people dead.
Fifty-three percent of those polled said the following statement came closest to their views on gun control:
"There should be new federal regulation of certain guns and accessories; for example, the 'bump stock', which can alter semi-automatic rifles to fire at a rapid pace. Stricter gun laws will prevent felons, the mentally ill, or other dangerous people from getting their hands on an assault weapon with such ease and committing mass murder.
"Protecting many people from tragedy is the price the American people should pay by relinquishing some of their second amendment right to keep and bear arms."
But 39 percent agreed that any new federal regulations on certain guns and accessories will not prevent "massacres or gun violence from happening" and say Americans have the right to keep and bear arms.
"On one hand, the public doesn't want to mess with the second amendment," Zogby noted in the report accompanying the poll results.
"However, the public appears to be willing to consider various regulations of gun laws and, in general, believes that various restrictions do serve the purpose in making it harder for dangerous people to obtain guns."
The survey polled 1,514 likely voters. The margin of error is plus or minus 2.5 percentage points.
