Billionaire Tom Steyer's campaign to impeach President Donald Trump will continue under new leadership now that Steyer is making a bid for the White House, The Hill is reporting.
Steyer founded the Need to Impeach campaign in 2017. It will now continue under the direction of Nathaly Arriola.
The decision to put the organization under Arriola came as Steyer announced he is running for president as a Democrat.
"The momentum behind impeachment is stronger than ever and the American public continues to demand that Congress do its job and start an impeachment inquiry," Arriola said.
The impeachment campaign is focusing its efforts on former special counsel Robert Mueller's July 17 testimony before the House Judiciary Committee.
"Mueller's testimony will give the entire country a chance to see this administration's corruption and lawlessness on national TV," Arriola said. "And as momentum builds, Need to Impeach will continue to organize across the country and the lead alongside the millions of Americans who are standing up for our democracy."
Meanwhile, Jay Sekulow, Trump's personal attorney, said the president's legal team is not preparing for an impeachment battle. He said the growing call from congressional Democrats is just "political theater."
"I just don't see this as a real threat," Sekulow said.
