Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand's call for Congress to ban assault weapons just hours after five people were shot dead at Maryland newspaper was a "waste of time" that has nothing to do with the tragedy, former New York City Police Commissioner Bernard Kerik told Newsmax TV.
"Everything she said was wrong. It had nothing to do with this event, it had nothing to do with this incident -- not to mention she lives in a state that has New York City which has some of the strictest, toughest gun laws in the entire country," Kerik said Friday on Newsmax's "America Talks Live."
"I know she's a politician, I know she's looking for her five minutes of fame there on the gun issue, but it was a waste of time because this had nothing to do with it."

Gillibrand, a New York Democrat, told Chris Cuomo on CNN she's confident that Congress will be able to pass gun reform, including the banning of assault weapons and bump stocks, as well as stricter background checks.
But Kerik said: "It had nothing to do with assault weapons, it had nothing to do with concealed weapons, it had nothing to do with bump stocks, it had nothing to do with what she mentioned."
Police say Jarrod W. Ramos, 38, who had a long grudge against the Capital Gazette in Annapolis blasted his way into the newsroom with a pump-action shotgun in an attack that left four journalists and a sales employee dead.
