The protesters in Hong Kong have made five demands in their pro-Democracy movement, but they are going to fall on deaf ears, Far East foreign affairs expert Gordon Chang said during an appearance Tuesday on Newsmax TV.
"That is because Beijing believes – and Carrie Lam is saying – any concession is going to lead to calls for more concessions," Chang told "Newsmax Now."
"As we've seen, the demands have escalated over time, as you normally would see in a situation like this."
Host John Bachman outlined the five demands pro-Democracy protesters have made.
- Lam's resignation as Chief Executive of Hong Kong.
- Withdraw extradition bill.
- Stop describing protests as "riots."
- Waive charges against arrested protesters.
- Conduct independent inquiry of crowd control officers.
Chang told Bachman any attention to the above is "extremely unlikely."
"Beijing is concerned about the next demand that will be made, and that is independence for Hong Kong," Chang said. "A lot of the protesters are already talking about that. Some are even talking about the end of communism in China itself.
"So, you can imagine Beijing wants to dig in its heels and see if they can sort of intimidate everybody else."
