Former Rep. Tom Tancredo said Tuesday a Republican proposal that would allow people who illegally came to the United States as children to become citizens should never see the light of day.
Tancredo spoke with Newsmax TV's JD Hayworth and was asked about a GOP-led effort to replace the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program — which he said would essentially be a form of amnesty.

"I hope, of course, that it goes nowhere. I would kind of think it's not going to," said Tancredo, a former Republican congressman from Colorado. "This is the reason why there's been nothing done on the DREAM Act since it was initiated by President [Barack] Obama because you got all these various factions.
"I don't see them necessarily coming together now because the DREAM Act is going to go away in six months and I hope it does. I hope it just ends."
Tancredo added that lawmakers will often introduce pieces of legislation that they know will fail, simply to look good for their constituents.
"People in our business will kind of make a statement by introducing a piece of legislation that they really don't believe is going to go anywhere, and I'm hoping that that's the case with this," Tancredo said. "Just another statement by people who are trying to mollify a constituency that they are concerned about in their state."
DACA will be phased out by March after Attorney General Jeff Sessions announced the program will end. The six-month delay is for lawmakers to write and pass legislation that would serve as a permanent replacement to the rule.
