Gingrich: Next Pope Won’t Be American

Newt Gingrich, who converted to Catholicism in 2009, declares that it is “very, very unlikely” the next Pope will be an American.

The former House speaker tells Newsmax: “This is probably obvious, but the cardinals will hopefully stop and submit themselves in prayer to God and will seek to open their hearts and their minds to God and will seek wisdom from God.

“Ideally, a Pope is not picked by the cardinals. Ideally, a Pope is picked by the Holy Spirit. When they go into the Sistine Chapel for the conclave, I hope their attitude will be reverential and they will try to understand, at this moment in time, what does the human race need in a Catholic Church? What can a Catholic Church bring to save people across the planet? And what kind of leader would be best for that church?

“It’s very important that they see themselves as the vessels of God’s will, not trying to seek the cardinals’ best choice, but trying to seek God and the Holy Spirit’s best choice.”
