Huma Abedin, wife of embattled New York City mayoral candidate Anthony Weiner, plans to take an extended vacation from her job as head of Hillary Clinton's transition team.
Unidentified sources told Politico that the upcoming time off, apparently through August, is not a leave of absence but something that had been planned.
But the Politico sources said the time would provide a welcome change for Abedin, who had been helping with her husband's controversial campaign in the wake of his sexting scandal while trying to fulfill her role as one of Clinton's most important staffers as the former secretary of state transitions away from government to become more involved in her family's charitable foundation work.

According to Politico, Clinton also will be on vacation through most of August, leaving Abedin the option to be with her husband in the final weeks of his mayoral race.
"Huma is not taking a leave of absence, but she will be taking vacation time in August to support her family during Anthony's campaign," a Weiner campaign source told Politico. "She had always intended to do this."
It was revealed last week that Weiner continued sending lews texts to women as recently as November 2012, long after initial stories of sexting forced him to resign from Congress.
In a news conference, Weiner insisted his behavior was wrong and that he stopped. Abedin appeared with him, telling reporters she had forgiven her husband and still believed he was New Yorkers' best choice for mayor.
Politico raised questions Tuesday about how involved she plans to remain in her husband's campaign. Since the news conference, she has been absent from his appearances and was not featured in a campaign video with Weiner, was shot in the couple's Manhattan apartment.
Citing its sources, Politico said Clinton spokesman Philippe Reines urged Abedin not to participate in the video but "to take some time to think after a painful and difficult week."
