Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer, D-N.Y., was caught on a hot mic Thursday discussing the much talked-about meeting he had with President Donald Trump regarding immigration.
"He likes us – he likes me, anyway," Schumer said of Trump. The Washington Examiner posted a clip of the video from the Senate floor.
"Look, what we said was exactly accurate," Schumer said regarding Democrats' version of events at Wednesday's working dinner at the White House. "Here's what I told him. I said, 'Mr. President, you're much better off if you can sometimes step right and sometimes step left. If you have to step in one direction, you're boxed.' He gets that."
Wednesday's meeting with Schumer, House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif., and Trump involved discussions about immigration and, more specifically, what to do about the expiring Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program. Schumer and Pelosi said in a statement Trump agreed to exclude a border wall from legislation that would help DACA recipients. The White House said that was not the case.
Schumer closed Thursday's conversation with several people whose identities are not known by saying, "We are always going to work it out, and it will make us more productive, too."
