Twitter pounced on President Donald Trump’s Sunday tweets dismissing Secretary of State Rex Tillerson’s effort at direct talks to stop North Korea’s nuclear buildup, with condemnation coming from both the right and left.
Former Weekly Standard editor Bill Kristol called Trump’s description of Tillerson’s efforts as a “waste of time” “remarkably foolish ad irresponsible” and wondered if Tillerson’s resignation was on the horizon.
Former ethics lawyer for President George W. Bush tweeted “we would all be dead” had President John F. Kennedy responded similarly during the Cuban missile crisis.
Pollster Larry Sabato called Trump’s tweets “unbelievable.”
But conservative Ben Shapiro mocked the posting.
Former Florida GOP lawmaker David Jolly also chided the tweets as “typical fine timing.”
Former U.S. Ambassador to Israel under President Barack Obama, Dan Shapiro, said the tweets make Tillerson “useless” in foreign policy negotiations and were a “devastating blow’ to Tillerson’s “effectiveness.”
Rep. Adam Schiff, D-Calif., called out Trump’s failure “to understand the catastrophic consequences.”
And National Review correspondent Jim Geraghty darkly joked:
