Report: Dems Mirror Bannon in Targeting GOP 'Swamp' in 2018

By    |   Saturday, 07 October 2017 10:58 PM EDT

The Democratic Party is working a parallel campaign by former White House chief strategist Steve Bannon with a new advertising push targeting House Speaker Paul Ryan and 11 other vulnerable Republicans in next year's elections, focusing on Obamacare.

The spot — called "Never Stop" and warning voters that the GOP is still "coming after your healthcare" — appears to mirror efforts by Bannon to target establishment Republicans hostile to President Donald Trump's agenda, USA Today reports.

The television ad will begin running next Thursday on MSNBC and CNN and is sponsored by the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee.

Radio spots will also run in the districts of 10 vulnerable Republicans who backed a failed plan in May to repeal basic elements of the Affordable Care Act.

They include Reps. Jeff Denham of California and Martha McSally of Arizona.

In addition, the ads will target Texas Rep. Will Hurd, who voted against the "skinny" repeal, USA Today reports.

Democrats would need win 23 more seats to take control of the House in next year's midterms.

The Democrats see Ryan, the Wisconsin Republican and 2012 vice presidential candidate, as their most urgent target next year.

They also are targeting GOP leaders and rank-and-file members in their efforts.

"House Republicans will stop at nothing to rip away affordable healthcare coverage from their constituents, and we are all at risk as long as they control the House," DCCC Chairman Ben Ray Luján told USA Today.

Bannon, who helped President Trump win last year, has steadily attacked Ryan, and Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell of Kentucky, as key obstacles to Trump's agenda.

He is leading efforts to dig up dirt on Republican Senate incumbents who might betray the president and to trying  to replace them next year, USA Today reports.

The Democratic effort resulted from internal polling that suggests that Trump's "drain the swamp" campaign pledge resonated with voters.

Many in the Midwest disdain the GOP establishment, and in particular, the House and Senate leadership, according to the report.

While most Trump supporters rip them as obstructionists, Democrats see leaders as key to an agenda that risks the nation's safety-net programs, beginning with healthcare.

"It should be no cause for comfort that House Republicans have failed to repeal our healthcare, increase out-of-pocket costs, and go after people with pre-existing conditions thus far, as Speaker Ryan has already indicated that they will continue this personal assault in the coming months," Luján told USA Today.
