DNC Chair Tom Perez on Election Wins: 'Overwhelming Repudiation' of Trump

Democratic National Committee Chairman Tom Perez said Wednesday the party's victories in Virginia, New Jersey, and in other statewide races represented "a pretty overwhelming repudiation" of President Donald Trump.

"President Trump routinely engages in conduct unbecoming the president of the United States," Perez, who served as Labor Secretary under former President Barack Obama, told Brooke Baldwin on CNN. "He's the most divisive president in American history.

"What people are telling us — the voters of Virginia, New Jersey, and elsewhere — is: 'I'm fed up with the division.'

"'I want somebody who I can be proud of. I want somebody who my kids can be proud of. I want someone who is going to be looking out for me.'

"They are not seeing that in this president," Perez said. "That's why you saw a pretty overwhelming repudiation."

Besides governorships in Virginia and New Jersey, Democrats won races for mayor, county executive, city council — as well as for House and Senate — in states ranging from New York to Florida to New Hampshire to Minnesota to North Carolina.

In addition, openly transgender Democrats won seats in the Virginia House of Delegates and the Minneapolis City Council.

Despite the victories, however, Perez noted "now, we have more work to do.

"I know that we have to earn the trust of voters," he told Baldwin. "It's not simply something you are given.

"We're doing that by leading with our values day in and day out. Talking about how healthcare should be a right for all and not a privilege for a few.

"Talking about how we are going to continue to fight for good jobs that pay a decent wage. The right to form a union.

"Making sure that women continue to have a right to make their own reproductive health decisions and not someone else do it.

"These are the issues people care about."
