One Republican lawmaker said Monday that Congress' reputation is on the line when it comes to accomplishing tax reform this year.
"I think it's existential to the appearance, to the reputation, and to the efficacy of Congress, to get tax reform done," Rep. Francis Rooney, R-Fla., told The Hill.
The GOP is still taking hits for failing to pass legislation to repeal and replace Obamacare this year, with the party controlling both the executive and legislative branches of government.
Tax reform is the next big agenda item and President Donald Trump is pushing it hard as he seeks to lower taxes for individuals and businesses.
Peter Roskam, R-Ill., told The Hill it will be more difficult to pass legislation as high profile as tax reform next year because of the upcoming 2018 midterm elections.
"2017 is the year for tax reform," Roskam said. "As you move into an election year, let's face it, things get more controversial and more difficult."
Sen. Lindsey Graham, R-S.C., appeared to echo Rooney's comment during a television appearance Monday, saying the Republican Party could "disintegrate" if it cannot reform the nation's tax system.
Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, R-Ky., appeared with Trump at a joint press conference Monday and said he wants to get tax reform passed before the end of the year.
