President Donald Trump tweeted Tuesday that he received "multiple standing ovations" at a lunch earlier that day with Republican senators.
Republican Sen. John Kennedy of Louisiana had told reporters earlier Trump received three standing ovations at the meeting, The Hill reported. When asked if the ovations were related to anything Trump had said, Kennedy said they were related to Trump as president.
Trump's comment that "Most are great people" comes after Sen. Jeff Flake, R-Ariz., took to the Senate floor to announce his retirement and to slam the president's behavior. Flake said in one interview he did not speak to Trump at the lunch.
Sen. Bob Corker, R-Tenn., also fired a fresh attack at Trump on Tuesday morning. Trump shot back that Corker, who also is not running for re-election, "couldn't get elected dog catcher in Tennessee."
