A GOP group backed by mega-donors whose aim is to get Republican women elected and was designed as a response to EMILY's List has already quietly delivered millions to candidates, Politico reported Wednesday.
EMILY's List is a national political action committee founded in 1984 that supports pro-choice, female Democratic candidates. The GOP group, Winning for Women, has yet to officially launch but is already picking up steam with supporters like Linda McMahon, Betsy DeVos, Robert and Rebekah Mercer, TD Ameritrade founder Joe Ricketts and his son, Todd, and hedge fund billionaire Paul Singer.
The group includes 30,000 members and hopes to grow to 400,000 by November 2018, according to a source who spoke with Politico.
EMILY's List has over five million members and last year spent over $90 million supporting Democratic female candidates.
Some members in the GOP group include Katie Walsh, the former White House Deputy chief of staff, and Kelly Ayotte, the former New Hampshire senator who was defeated in her 2016 reelection bid by Democratic Gov. Maggie Hassan.
Currently, only five females in the senate are Republicans compared to 16 Democrats. In the House, there are 62 Democrats and 22 Republicans and nearly a fourth of the Republican women are not coming back next term.
