Sen. Joe Manchin, D-W. Va., raised over $234,750 this year in individual contributions for his 2018 re-election bid, but just $7,900 comes from people in his home state, the Charleston Gazette-Mail is reporting.

About 3 percent of his individual contributions came from residents in West Virginia, compared to 41 percent from Texas, 14 percent from Washington, D.C. and 14 percent from New York, according to the newspaper.

The Washington Free Beacon said his April quarterly report to the Federal Commission, which covers Jan. 1 - March 31, listed just five donors with West Virginia addresses

A combined $6,400 was contributed to Manchin from three executives of Waco Oil and Gas. Another $1,000 came from an executive in Charleston and a retired woman in Huntington kicked in an additional $500, according to the Free Beacon.

Jefrey Pollock, a spokesman for Manchin, said local contributions are low because Manchin has been busy helping constituent services while in town and not focusing on fundraising.

"When the senator is in the state, he is generally spending a lot of his time trying to help constituents do the things they're asking him to do on their behalf, which is to help create new jobs and find new opportunities for jobs," he told the newspaper.

"Nationally, people are giving him money all over the country because they know how important the senator is, they recognize the national effort he's been a part of, and see him as a real leader who they want to see get elected to the United States Senate."

Including his individual contributions, Manchin raised $550,000 for his re-election campaign this year, the Beacon noted. And the Gazette reported. he now has $2.17 million on hand.
